THE DULKAS’ WINE HOUSE
The Dulkas’ Wine House is designed and suited for true wine aficionados. When its reconstruction began in 2007, the aim was to keep its former appearance, which is sure to evoke past times, especially in terms of wine processing and keeping. Apart from the old objects which were once used in this rich homestead, you can see the full set of remarkably preserved furniture, dating back from the turn of the nineteenth century.
Since recently, this house has been the ownership of the Dulka family. Its previous owners were also wine growers and winemakers, who were, in their time, even before World War I, considered the best winemakers in Karlovci. It was the Metzings, a German family from Karlovci, one of the leading homesteads there in the middle of the 19th century. Like many others, they were affected by the rich history of Karlovci – their enormous vineyards enabled them to educate their son in Vienna, like so many other children from Karlovci. Right after their graduation they would go to wealthier and livelier towns, unlike the peaceful Karlovci. However, the winds of war took their toll taking them away and leaving the house with its inhabitants’ pictures alone.
The history of the house is intertwined with the tragic love story of the house owner and his Jewish love. In the mid 1930s, before World War II, they were forced to run away. He decided to wait for her eternally, alone and quiet, fearing to reveal his big secret. Unfortunately, their story had no happy ending.
Those heading for what is now The Dulkas’ Wine House will have the opportunity to sightsee as the place has been converted to a museum. The visitors will be able to enjoy the Dulkas’ wine, which means they will taste different flavours and compare the traditional winemaking with a brand new technology, applied in top western wineries. They will also try old local recipes for certain wines such as bermet, ausbruch and schiller, produced for ages only in the richest housholds in Karlovci.
One of the impressive monuments related to the history of the people living in and passing through Karlovci is certainly the Peace Chapel, located about fifty metres above The Dulka’s Wine House. If you go towards the chapel, on your right you will first come across the Dulka’s Wine House.
The famous Treaty of Karlowitz was signed in this chapel in Sremski Karlovci on January 26, 1699 between Austria and its allies on one side and Turkey on the other, through the mediation of England and Holland. Among the participants in this historic event were the representatives of the Holy League (Russia, Venice and Poland). For the first time in the history of diplomacy, negotiations were held at the round table so that no one would have the place of honour.
If you decide to visit The Dulkas’ Wine House, we promise you an unforgettable stay. As well as enjoying wonderful wines, you will learn something about them. As the ancient Romans said
